Love Waiting
"Love keeps the door open, the light waiting, and dinner in the oven for years."
Edith Schaeffer
This job we call homemaking; the raising of children, the cooking of meals, the supporting of husbands, folding of laundry, doing of dishes, mopping, scrubbing, tidying... it can be a tough job. The days are long, we're on call 24:7, the messes keep being made and we find ourselves doing the same things over and over and over again.
Lately I've found the redundancy, my inability to keep up, and the constancy to be a tad discouraging. Inspired by this quote from the late and lovely Edith Schaeffer, I'm trying to remember a few things. Maybe you need to remember them too?
Remember today that your work isn't a sprint. We are called to be faithful in the position the Lord has given to us until He returns or calls us home. It's a long race, but we can be encouraged that "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion" {Philippians 1:6} and we can be "looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of God" {Hebrews 12:2}. Hang in there.
Remember today that your work is significant. Building a loving and secure safe haven for your people is no small accomplishment. You are raising little souls that matter in the scope of eternity. You are pouring into a marriage that reflects the love of Christ and His Church to a watching, needy world. These things matter. Greatly.
Remember today who your work is for. "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ" {Colossians 3:23-24}.
Remember today that your work is moving towards a far greater weight of glory. "For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison" {2 Corinthians 4:17}.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up" {Galatians 6:9}.
Keep on loving. Keep that light on, waiting. And keep putting that dinner in the oven, day after day, week after week, year after year... even when it goes unnoticed and unappreciated. Your Father in Heaven sees, calls you blessed, and will reward you.
