Our Favorite Beach Books
My husband and I both grew up near the ocean {he Atlantic, me Pacific}, and hitting the beach is a summertime essential for us. Earlier this season, the kids were picking up lots of beach themed books at the library. All of that reading really built their anticipation levels high- by the time we finally made our day trip to Cape May, the kids could hardly wait to hit the shore!
Here are a few family favorites:
Kermit the Hermit by Bill Peet. A greedy crab is forever changed for the better by a little boy's act of kindness. Charming and humorous, with a feel-good ending.
A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. Of course we love anything by Eric Carle! His brightly colored illustrations really capture the feel of summer for me.
Ladybug Girl at the Beach by David Soman and Jacky Davis. Both S and W love the spunky Lulu and her adorable dog Bingo. Join Lulu as she overcomes her fear of the ocean and has a wonderful day with her family at the beach. Gorgeous illustrations.
On the Seashore by Anna Milbourne. My mom picked up this title for the kids last year. An artist, she selected it for its beautifully painted illustrations. We love them too! Explore tidal pools in the sand.
Beach Day! (Max and Ruby). My kids are nuts for Max and Ruby. The ever-controlling Ruby puts Max to work in helping her craft the perfect sand castle. While he doesn't always meet her expectations, and she doesn't quite give Max the freedom he desires, they both manage to have a good time. And Max, as usual, saves the day.
Beach Day by Fran Manushkin and Kathy Wilburn. This little gem is one my mom saved from my childhood. While it may be difficult to track down, you and your kids will enjoy following a little girl's adventures with her family at the beach.
Help me out- what titles am I missing that we have to check out?
